Denmark

Located in Scandinavia, Denmark comprises numerous islands and the Jutland Peninsula. Linked to nearby Sweden its stunning capital, is home to some iconic landmarks including the royal palaces, the colourful Nyhavn harbor, as well as the charming Tivoli amusement park and of course, the “Little Mermaid” statue. 

Denmark's history in Europe started with the Viking Age, in approximately 800 AD, when the Danes famously began plundering churches and monasteries. By 878 the Danes had conquered the majority of the north and east of England. By the 11th century, King Canute (1014-35) ruled over a vast kingdom that included much of Scandinavia and England. Christianity was introduced to Denmark in 826 and flourished during Canute's reign. After his death, his empire disintegrated.

Denmark is one of the oldest states in Europe and the oldest kingdom in the world. The current monarch, Queen Margrethe II, in situ since April 1972, belongs to the oldest lineage in Europe, dating back to early 900 AD.

The Danish language originates from a northern section of the Germanic language group, and has a resemblance to other Scandinavian tongues. Denmark's most famous author is Hans Christian Andersen, who has written many fairy tales, which have been translated into more languages than any other book except the Bible. Other famous Danish authors include Karen Blixen, who penned "Out of Africa" and "Babette's Feast"; and ​Theologian and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, a forerunner of modern existentialism.

This amazing Nordic country is known for its sturdy engineering, architecture, food, fashion, art galleries and museums, castles and palaces, and truly world-class cities. It is a wonderful place to visit.
